How to lock an object in place in a video
You walk around a parked bike while filming. The bike stays in exactly the same spot on screen, and the whole world swings around it. Here is how that shot is made.
What the effect actually is
It looks like the camera was on rails. It wasn't. The shot is filmed handheld, and the "locking" happens afterwards, in editing.
An app picks one small detail in your video — a logo, a headlight, a sticker — and follows it through every single frame. It knows where that detail sits in frame 1, frame 2, frame 3, and so on. Then it slides and turns the whole video so that detail lands in the same place every time.
Your object stops moving. Everything else keeps moving. That contrast is the entire effect, and it's why it reads as expensive even though it was filmed while walking.
The steps
- Film a slow walk around the object. Keep it roughly in the middle of the screen. You don't have to be smooth — that's the app's job — but you do have to keep the object in shot the whole time.
- Open the clip and pick your spot. Put the tracking box on one small, clear detail. Not the whole object — one detail on it.
- Run the track. The app follows that spot through the clip and moves the video to match.
- Fill the edges. Moving the video leaves gaps at the sides. Fill them, or you'll get black bars. More on that here.
- Export. Keep it short — 3 to 5 seconds is where this shot works best.

Picking a good spot to track
This is the part that decides whether the shot works, and it's the part people get wrong. The app is looking for a pattern it can recognise again in the next frame. Some spots are easy to recognise. Some are impossible.
Good spots have sharp edges and high contrast:
- A logo or badge
- The corner of a headlight
- A sticker, a bolt head, a valve
- Where two very different colours meet
Bad spots look the same as everything around them:
- Flat paint with no marks on it
- Sky, grass, plain road
- Anything shiny — reflections slide across the surface as you move, so the pattern changes even though the object hasn't
- Anything that leaves the screen partway through the clip
The shiny-surface trap. A polished car panel is the most common failed track. The reflection moves independently of the car, so the app follows the reflection and your shot drifts. Track a badge, a panel gap or a tyre marking instead — something that is physically part of the object.
Why the track sometimes slips
If your object drifts out of position partway through, one of these is usually why:
- The spot got hidden. Your own hand, a pole, or the object turning away. The app can't follow what it can't see.
- You moved too fast. Fast motion makes each frame blurry, and blur destroys the pattern. Walk slower than feels necessary.
- The light changed. Walking from sun into shade changes how the spot looks.
- The spot was too small. Very small boxes have very little pattern to work with.
The fix is almost always the same: pick a different spot and run it again. It takes seconds, and the second choice is usually much better than the first.
Filming tips that make editing easy
- Walk an arc, don't spin. Move your feet around the object rather than twisting on the spot. The background change is what sells the shot.
- Shoot wider than you need. The app crops in to do its work, so leave room around your object.
- Keep it short. Most of these clips are 2 to 5 seconds. Longer gives the track more chances to slip and doesn't look better.
- Film in good light. Dark footage is noisy, and noise looks like moving pattern to a tracker.
Does this work on a person?
Yes, with one difference. People change shape as they move, so track something that stays flat and consistent — a logo on a jacket, sunglasses, a shoe — rather than a face or a hand. And expect to cut the clip shorter, because people turn away from the camera more than parked objects do.
