How to stabilize shaky video on an iPhone
Your phone already removes some shake before the video is even saved. This explains what it does, what it can't do, and how to fix what's left.
Two different problems people call "shaky"
They need different fixes, so it's worth knowing which one you have.
Small, fast wobble. The picture jitters slightly all the time. This is your hands. It's what people normally mean by shaky, and it's the easy one to fix.
Big, slow drift. The thing you're filming slides around the screen because you were walking. Smoothing won't help here — your object genuinely moved across the frame. That needs tracking instead, which is a different job.
What your iPhone already does
Every recent iPhone stabilizes while recording. The lens physically shifts to cancel small movements, and the software crops in slightly and slides the picture around inside that crop. This is why handheld iPhone video already looks better than it has any right to.
It has limits. It works on a frame-by-frame basis with no idea what comes next, so it can't smooth out a whole walking motion. And on the very wide lens it has less room to work with.
Action mode (the running-person icon in the Camera app) turns this up a lot. It is genuinely good. The costs: it crops in noticeably, it needs bright light, and it caps your resolution. If you know in advance the shot will be rough, turn it on. It's better than fixing things afterwards.
Fixing it after filming
An editing app can do something your camera can't: it can look at the whole clip at once. It knows where the picture goes for the entire take, so it can work out a smooth path and push every frame onto it.
That's why stabilizing afterwards can look better than stabilizing while recording. It has more information to work with.

The trade nobody tells you about
Every stabilizer works by moving the picture around. To move it, it has to zoom in first, so there's spare picture to slide into view. That means stabilizing always costs you some of your frame.
Stronger smoothing needs more room to move, so it crops more. That's the trade: smoothness against how much of your shot survives. Any app promising perfect smoothing with no crop is either cropping without telling you, or stretching the edges.

Things that beat any software fix
Stabilizing can only work with the footage you gave it. These cost nothing and help more than any setting:
- Use both hands and tuck your elbows against your body. Your ribcage is steadier than your arms.
- Walk heel to toe, knees slightly bent. Most shake when walking is your steps, not your hands.
- Don't use pinch zoom. Zooming multiplies the shake. Walk closer instead.
- Film in good light. In the dark your phone holds the shutter open longer, which makes each frame blurry. Blur cannot be stabilized out — the smear is baked into the picture.
- Lean on something. A wall, a car roof, a fence. Free tripod.
Blur is not shake. People often try to stabilize footage that is actually motion-blurred from low light. Stabilizing will hold it steady and it will still look soft, because every individual frame is already smeared. There's no fix for that after the fact — it has to be solved with more light when filming.
Do I need a gimbal?
For most phone video, no. A gimbal wins for long walking shots and for smooth, deliberate camera moves. For the short clips most people post — a few seconds around an object — your phone plus software stabilizing gets close enough that the gimbal mostly stays at home.
